Movement has emancipated itself from sport.

For a long time, in what we can call traditional sports, the body was primarily a tool serving the sport. He was the tool. It was thought of and trained only within the framework of a specific goal. This is still the case for high-level athletes. Performance comes at this price, it's said, and from top to bottom of the pyramid, the overall direction was the same. There was a need to learn, progress, and perfect.

Martial arts, which arrived in France between the two world wars and expanded significantly after the Second, perhaps mark a first turning point. The body is more than a means; it’s also the subject of a philosophy that leads to a form of performance, a push towards accomplishment, but also constitutes a path to guide the spirit. Judo, karate, and taekwondo teach the same type of philosophy. This is why we rightly speak of martial arts.

Another notable change is the advent of fitness. It’s more down-to-earth; we then focus on our bodies to be in shape. The body is also a matter of identity; we seek to fit an athletic trend, not new (see The Obsession with Physical Culture). Also, remember that the cult of physical beauty dates back to the Greeks.
