What if we transformed swimming pools into fitness rooms?

“All of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came.” John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Of course, swimming pools are not salty, but we wanted to illustrate our relationship with water in a somewhat detached and poetic way. These words of JFK resonate well. Let’s start with some observations:

[arm_restrict_content plan=”unregistered,” type=”hide”]

  • Municipal swimming pools are useful structures, but not profitable. This is what the Court of Auditors says.
  • They are only adapted to one vision; competitive swimming even though they serve the need to learn to swim.
  • In fact, the pool imposes “swimming” almost as the standard of what should be done.
  • Their attendance is highly variable. For these reasons in particular.
  • Too bad, they are fairly evenly distributed across the territory and affordable in price.

We are now in 2018 (the analysis was written in 2018). Even if:

  • we must obviously look towards 2024,
  • it is important not to neglect the fact that swimming (Olympic or not) is a fabulous sport and a beautiful spectacle,
  • it’s necessary to do more than simply add digital content.

Would it not be possible to imagine reinventing swimming? Yes, to this question we have already proposed reflection.

Let’s go back to the pool. What if the pool were no longer just the place for “lengths”? What if the pool were not limited by this narrow vision like a swimming lane? What if public money could see broader?

Elements that support this direction:

  • The success of fitness does not decline
  • The world of fitness constantly innovates
  • Aquabike shows that fitness in the water makes sense.
  • Women are looking for other formats, new ideas. Like Aquabike precisely
  • This video of Laird Hamilton shows that you can do something else in a pool
  • The proposal tends to prove that we can attract a different audience
  • Fitness is a popular sport that indeed touches all social classes
  • The development of swimrun leads us to believe that people like to swim differently.
  • Water and what can be done there, makes one dream #thebigblue. Guillaume Nery too.

The overall idea is to say, once again, that a certain vision of sport limits the vision of an entire activity. No, being an Olympic champion is not the ultimate goal for most, we cannot center the use of such equipment on this objective.

  • let’s transform (partly, of course) swimming pools into fitness rooms
  • let’s develop in municipal pools the learning of apnea, relaxation
  • Let’s teach water to children in a different way
  • Let’s make a connection between artificial waves and the ocean Let’s educate
  • Let’s use what happens in climbing to imagine the pool of tomorrow
  • The pool is the indoor ocean. From outdoor to indoor. It’s a trend since, by 2050, 75% of the population will be urban
  • Let’s not disparage traditional swimming, but let’s put it in its proper place. Effort must not erase hedonism.

Let’s invent the municipal pool (or not) 3.0. Let’s dare to change the cultural register.
